Global Eye Trials · Visual acuity examiner training
VAE training simulator
Practise the visual acuity examination used in clinical trials: subjective refraction with ETDRS Chart R, then best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) with Charts 1 and 2, recorded on the worksheet as you go.
The examination
Refraction · right eye→Record today’s refraction→Refraction · left eye→Record today’s refraction→BCVA · right eye→BCVA · left eye
Refraction has three stages: best vision sphere, cross-cylinder (axis, then power) and sphere refinement.
How to use it
Choose the cylinder form you work in:
Choose a run from the menu: the full exam (both eyes), the right eye only (about half the time), or a single module: best vision sphere, cross-cylinder, sphere refinement or BCVA.
Or watch a demo first. Recommended if this is your first time. There’s a demo of the full exam on the right eye, and demos of each module.
How you answer
During refraction
Click the buttons to measure acuity, hold lenses and record your decisions. Turn the cross-cylinder with the buttons, or drag it. The patient answers in words.
Read chart+0.50Add +0.50Reject (no change)
On the worksheet
Click a letter once to circle it (correct), twice for an ✕ (incorrect), a third time to clear it. Type the row score in the box.
NCKZO3
Today’s refraction
Straight after each eye’s refraction, write the result on the worksheet: circle + or −, then the power either side of the decimal point, and the axis.
Corrections
Recorded entries are changed with ✎ Correct an entry. The old value is struck through with your initials and the date, as on paper.
Voice
The simulator speaks the examiner’s and the patient’s lines. Voices depend on your browser; Microsoft Edge has the most natural ones. Turn the voice on or off at any time with the button at the top.
Scoring
Mistakes are explained as soon as they happen and counted as you go. At the end of an exam you get a summary for each eye: the refraction, the recording of today’s refraction, and the BCVA. Recording mistakes are counted separately from technique mistakes.
